Sidecar's music was used in a documentary that's being debuted this weekend. Support this movie
Sidecar Radio's music was chosen to be used in a documentary that is debuting this weekend at the Maine International Film Festival in Waterville, Maine.
The film is called, 'The Rivals', and it is an incredible story focusing on two Maine high school football teams. The band is incredibly proud to be a part of this project, and this story...
The film will show Friday at 7pm, and Saturday at 12pm. All info is on the film festival's site, MIFF.ORG.
Here is a detailed description of the movie, taken from the MIFF's site:
Could there be any more different Maine towns than Rumford and Cape Elizabeth? Rumford is a working class town in the western mountains, where the paper mill is one of the region’s primary employers. Cape Elizabeth is an affluent Portland suburb, nestled in the lap of the sea and of luxury. But when Cape Elizabeth, which had had no tradition of high school football at all, starts a team and finds a coach who turns it from a doormat to an undefeated championship contender in just a few years, a rivalry is born with perennial powerhouse Rumford, a rivalry whose roots go far beyond what happens between the goal posts. The two football teams and their charismatic coaches, find themselves, as if in a story book script, heading towards undefeated seasons—with only the other standing in the way. The Rivals is a hugely entertaining, remarkably perceptive and yes, downright nail-biting true story. It's not just a film about Maine; it's a film virtually entirely by people who currently live in the State. Every camera person, sound person, and PA who worked the shoots is from Maine. The editing team is comprised of Mainers. The music, with the exception of one song, is done by musicians from Maine. Several bands and musicians contributed existing pieces or composed music for the film for nothing or next to nothing. The sound design and mixing was done in Portland. This is a 99% Made in Maine film. None of that would be as important as it is if The Rivals weren’t simply a terrific film, no matter what its origin.

PRESS RELEASE ABOUT THE NEW ALBUM OUT THIS SUMMER
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE, MAY 3, 2009:
SIDECAR RADIO SET TO RELEASE NEW MUSIC ON LABOR DAY RECORDS THIS COMING SUMMER
Sidecar Radio, the explosive rock/dub trio from Maine, is currently in the studio writing and recording their new material for a 2009 late summer release. This release will be on the heels of their 2008 EP, 'Wave Principle', and their 2007 EP, 'Static'. As with the last two releases, the band is keeping with their 'series' of short length EP's, and the yet to be named new disc should contain 5 tracks.
Sidecar considers the new material to be the best writing they've ever done, due in part to a newly introduced creative process.
"We are taking one song at a time." says frontman Christian Hayes. "No multi-tasking to distract from the current song at hand. It has allowed us to really micro-manage parts and really bounce ideas off of each other. It doesn't get any more democratic than our song writing process. We all contribute so much."
For Hayes, it means contributing in a new way this time around.
"This record finds me digging to new places, personally, to write these songs, and they're places that have taken me a long time to dig into."
The main source of inspiration? The death of his father over 6 years ago.
"As an artist, writing songs is one of the ultimate avenues for self-expression, and for putting your issues and disorders on the table as part of a catharsis and self therapy," Hayes says. "For me, this is the first time I have been able to write about the death of my father and the circumstances surrounding it. To think of all the material I have written with the band since he died in 2003, it has taken an extremely long time for me to finally find that place. It has been a personally rewarding and violently devastating experience all at the same time. Coffins that had been cemented closed since 2003 are now being torn open, and it has flipped my world around a little. The war is just beginning in a way, but this EP is the first win for me."
As hard as a process as it was, Hayes couldn't be more pleased with the final outcome. "It's a strange thought to think that artists can use song to express their inner workings and deep issues, all the while still forming it into the formula of a song with hooks, melodies, etc. I feel like this record is the ultimate marriage between me digging deep into my black holes that have sat untouched for 6 years, and the band writing the best composed and sickest tunes we've ever put together. I am beyond words when it comes to the new material."
For bandmates Jason Stewart and Corey Tibbetts, the new release will be about growth and evolution for Sidecar Radio. "It's always interesting to be in a band and watch the evolution happen from the inside out," Stewart says. "We've grown so much, personally as well as musically, and it's always got me wondering what we'll come up with next. My band mates never stop amazing me and I hope they never do."
Bassist Corey Tibbets touches on the band's evolution as well. "With each new EP, Sidecar digs to a new musical depth," he says. "The upcoming summer release is going to be no exception. Watching as each song we record mutates into something far greater than anything we could have envisioned, I can't help but be both excited and a little scared."
Still, with the jumps the band feels like they're making over time, a theme of curiosity concerning where the process will take them in the long run runs deep.
"As awesome as it is to record these songs and capture these moments, my mind is already spinning around what we can create to try and out-do ourselves again. By no means in a cocky way, but what I thrive on most is how much we try to push ourselves to be better. So no matter how many songs we write, record and release, I'll always be anxious to move forward," Stewart says.
Tibbetts agrees. "Our next EP is going to completely own, and this band hasn't even finished evolving yet."
A release date will be set in the next few months, and hometown CD release shows will be announced as well, and it couldn't come any sooner for the guys.
"We cannot wait to get this music out to our fans."
